I personally use my skillpoints on maintenance instead of repair (maintenance keeps shit from breaking and repairing just fixes shit leaving them usable but in poor condition.) PSI is very good for all except robots, turrets etc. (When you choose your military training and after it you have to choose one of the three doors three times, skills gained are shown on the top of your screen) You will get some skills when going through training, find out what they are and choose wisely.
